Reviews for Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri in Strategy for PC-Personal Computer ( PC ) :
This game ROCKS. "Civilization: Test of Time" can go jump in a lake, this is the real Civ3. Sid Meier and Brian Reynolds have made a pure masterpiece. Is it a sci-fi Civilization? No. Its more than that. The whole thing is very well rounded: good sound and appropriate music (by appropriate I mean that it fits the game), tons of sweet movies and quotes, a fine plot, and a very mysterious aura about what has been aptly named "Planet". Firaxiss first ever game is just plain sweet
Gameplay is good. There are many options to help you manage your faction, which is like another term for Empire. You can have base (another word for city) governers settle things, or really get micro-managing-ish and do everything yourself. Plus, the huge amount of information at your fingertips, and the massive amount of things you can do, really makes this game fantastic. You really feel like the head of a faction in everything you do: from forging alliances or fighting wars with other faction leaders to controlling drone riots and producing "Secret Projects", which are massive building-facility things, each of which helps your faction in a big way uniquely. And diplomacy seems realistic: computer opponents never say things that seem ridiculous, everything seems to fit.
Gameplay is also sweet in the way that you can really change up the landscape with formers, building magtubes, roads, farms and all sorts of stuff.
The graphics are definitily good enough. During battles, you can see damage being given out by both sides, which is about the only animation in the whole game. The lighting is also good. The actual graphics can get impressive at many parts, and the movies...there are so many!! For every time you build a secret project, of which there are at least thirty, a movie plays. The starting movie is also interesting, and some of the pictures of other factions capitols or other faction leaders histories are also quite good.
Although there arent a huge number of sounds in the game (the movie sounds are good though), the sounds that there are are outstanding. There are many quotes which are read aloud, a special phrase is said for many events which happen. The music often cannot be heard (thats supposed to happen; its not a bug), but when it can be it really fits the rest of the game.
