Reviews for Dirt Track Racing in Driving for PC-Personal Computer ( PC ) :

General/Summary:

I like driving games. My favourite has to be Gran Tourismo 2 on PSX. That game had it all. Cars, tracks, handling.

The dirt track racing I bought was the Assie car version as the USA one wasn't released here. The strange thing is though, the steering is still left hand drive. Very bizaar. This makes little difference to me as I prefer the front bumper view in driving games. I first played this game on a demo magazine cover disk and it was love at first drive.

Gameplay:

I have heard people describe this game as driving round in circles. To some degree this is a true statement, but to write this game off so easily is doing it a serious injustice. It is not the lop sided turning direction that makes this game special. It's real hook is the unadulterated exhileration one experiences when a 600 horse power V-8 driven, 1972 sedan starts to drift into a corner and you know that there is only one lap to go, with that bastard commodore (sorry if the Americans don't know what this is. Its basically a family sized sedan that comes in many concoctions) still to pass. You try to hold the car in a smooth slide but the grunty bitch just keeps drifting. You fight for traction and realise, all to late, that you're not going to make it. To your horror, as you straighten up, you clip the rear guard of the Commodore causing your car to start visciously fish tailing. By the time you have her under control 2 more cars have zoomed by you and your worthy 2nd has turned into a disapointing 4th.

Here in lies the thing that makes this game great , in my book. When you add the fact that the handling is an absolute dream and totally configurable, this game is great for begginers as well as would be fangio's. You can upgrade your car in numerous ways but it doesn't get over complicated as it does sometimes in the afformentioned GT2. Most of the changes make common sense with the resulting handling changes being delightfully noticable without being radical. The lowest class is Stock car and as the name implies these cars are not done up in any way. To do so moves them into the Pro Stock catagory. This opens up quite a challenge on the harder difficulty settings as it takes precise driving skills to win. The beauty here is that it is quite reasonable to do the Stock events with a car and then hot it up for the next level up. The factors make such a difference that you will be competetive as long as enough work has been done. Again, skill is heavily relied upon. You can beef your ride right up to being a monster but you still have to be able to handle it. Remember the "DIRT" part of the title means that is the slippery surface that you will be racing on. Controlling a 700 horse power beast around a tight dirt track can negate the advantage of power pretty quickly when things come unstuck. I think this is brilliant as you can't just take a beast into a race if you can't drive it. This game is unforgiving to these tactics unless you are a skilled driver. If you are a skilled driver then you won't need the biggest engine to win (although it helps). Catch 22 or what?

I am not the b
est at driving games, although I hold my own. I find myself adicted to this game. If I don't do well in a race I am impelled to try harder next race. There are so many variables that affect your ability to win the race that it is never a forgone conclusion. With reverse grids in the heats meaning if you poll first then you are starting at the back of the grid in the heat, then you find yourself jostling to get a good position so you can make the A-Main. There are usaully 3-4 Main races and your performance in the heat dictates which one (if at all) you will be in. Its a unique system that makes good drivers have to work through the mains until they reach the "A". If you qualify fastest then you will have a lot of work to get to the A-Main straight out of the heat. It is a very leveling setup. I could go on for hours about the intricacies of the gameplay. Suffice it to say that it is refreshingly different. Add the sponsorship responsibilities and you have a game with true character.

Graphics:

I'll have to be brief. The graphics aren't going to blow your socks off. This could be because of my meagre setup. Itmust be said that the programers (Aussies by the way) have skillfully got this game to run on a modest machine and that is a credit to their skills. The skys, both night and day are truelly gorgeous and the rest of the visuals are more than adequate. The car models are not briliant but they portray the cars fairly well.

Sound:

Here is one aspect that annoyed me a bit. The cars don't sound different enough. They all sound like lumpy-cam V8s even when they are straigt sixes.
The music is irrelevant to me and I always turn it off. This kind of makes the engine sounds even more monotonous, although in the heat of the race WHO CARES! Drive on.
