Reviews for BreakNeck in Driving for PC-Personal Computer ( PC ) :
The graphics on the box look great, PC Zone gives it 80%!!!! Looks like it's worth a buy!!!!! I buy it, and I discover what a terrible game this really really is. Terrible physics, I mean, does a car really go from 0 - 180mph in 2 seconds??? I think this is a definate case of what happens when a software company like THQ decides to bung PC Zone a backhander for a good review! This game is FULL, and I mean FULL of bugs!!!!! It must have crashed about 10 times just trying to install it! PLUS the error messages come up in GERMAN when it does!!!!!!!! Then try playing the game, it's even worse!!! It has an impossible to understand race menu (it takes you about half an hour or more just to start a championship!) By the time you have done this, the game has already crashed at least 6 times. What a woefull piece of tripe!!!!
Ok, the game play is terrible. Cars don't handle realistly at all, there is also NO SENSE OF COMPETITION WHATSOEVER!!!!!! Unless you set the skill level to easiest, it turns out the other cars will have about 300% more speed then you do. This is evident in acceleration, along the straights and cornering................ what am I saying........ WHAT CORNERING????????? Since the physics are non existant, corners are a lucky guess. Too slow and the other cars just fly by you, try going at their speed and you will lose it big time!!! The crashes are pretty boring "outrun" type stuff. It wouldn't be so bad if they were interesting to watch (considering how often it will happen). The only thing that saves a little decency is the weapons races. It's the only way you can salvage 10 mins fun out of this game. And after that, there is little at all left.
Would you believe, that for the short times I managed to play this game without it crashing, the graphics were indeed quite eye catching! The speed and detail were good, but then again, they were marred by horrible gameplay. The weapons effects were very good too. But great graphics is no excuse for the brutal and dismall feel of the whole game.
Here the sound was ok. The cars didn't sound great, the car effects didnt sound great either. So what was the ok part? The ambient sound! I mean, racing through eygpt and the winds blowing in the desert, the animals in the market place. This added a great feel to the stages. Much better then most games seem to do, but at the end of the day, this would only bring the game up to %20 in my rating!
